A BUS fell plunged onto the Jhelum riverbank near Muzaffarabad in Pakistan on Saturday (29) morning, killing at least 10 people and injuring another 15.

The bus with 25 passengers on board was on its way from Rawalpindi to Chakothi village close to the Line of Control when it fell hundreds of feet down onto the riverbank near Zaminabad village, a police official said.

Five people were dead on the spot and as many others died on their way or upon their admission to hospital. The driver of the bus was among the dead. The injured passengers including an infant were undergoing treatment at Muzaffarabad.

Locals who heard the thud of the accident called up rescue officials, who along with local police personnel rushed to help the passengers, media reports said. The exact reason for the accident was not immediately known.

The stretch of the road at the accident spot was damaged due to erosion by the Jhelum river, the official said.

The accident took place less than two weeks after a speeding bus overturned in the Sindh province killing 13 people, mostly labourers, who were returning to work after Eid ul-Fitr holidays.
