AUTHORITIES in the US have said the death of a young Indian student was suicide, writes
Mita Mistry.

Udayaditya Konwar, 19, was studying for a degree in physics at the University of Maryland in Baltimore. He was due to travel to India on July 30, but a day before his flight, he was found dead at the campus.

His parents were informed by the Indian Embassy in the US and Prince George’s county
police, but the family was reportedly upset that there was no communication or support
from the university, although the university disputes this.

In a statement on August 6, it said: “The university offers our condolences to the family and friends of Udayaditya Konwar, as we grieve the loss of our student and friend.

“Within 24 hours, the division of student affairs connected his roommates and fraternity
brothers with the counseling center.

“The vice-president for student affairs connected with a family member over the weekend
to offer sympathy and support. We are in the process of contacting Yudi’s parents, who
reside in another country, and we are committed to fully supporting them and our community through this sad loss.”

Baltimore police confirmed the death was by suicide. Konwar’s cremation took place on August 5 at the family estate in the northeastern state of Assam in India.

Friends and family remembered Konwar as a cheerful and popular young man who would readily help those who needed it. He was a talented mixed martial arts athlete, and had won many trophies in the sport, they added.
