Lord Paul leads opening of Wolverhampton super campus

By: DrewMcLachlan

Asian peer Lord Swraj Paul played host to the University of Wolverhampton’s science and engineering staff, along with construction companies and trades education awarding bodies, as the university celebrated its investment of £100 million in a new construction super campus.

The project is part of the university’s “Our Vision – Your Opportunity” initiative to invest £250 million in education and training to support economic growth in the West Midlands.

The new super campus is situated in a 12 acre site, which was once home to the Springfield Brewery.

Once completed, the site will become Europe’s largest specialist construction and built environment campus, providing education and training in construction for students from the age of 14 through to senior professionals.

The building currently houses the West Midlands Construction University Technical College, with work on the University of Wolverhampton’s School of Architecture and Built Environment scheduled to start soon.

The university purchased the site in 2014, much of which had been destroyed in a fire in 2004.

At the celebration event, which took place last Thursday (11) at the House of Lords, the Chartered Institute of Building’s chief executive Chris Blythe said: “The construction industry isn’t different to any other industry. We have the ability to pull together many strings of activity and we can’t continue to have wistful and wasteful concepts for growth We need innovative approaches to skills and training.

“Building is at the heart of quality of life for people and we need a seamless transition from the past to the future. Springfield will most certainly make that difference.”
