President Ranil Wickremesinghe has urged political parties to collaborate in safeguarding the country’s economic stability by ensuring the success of the agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Speaking at a rally of the United National Party (UNP) on Labour Day, Wickremesinghe emphasized the need to prevent a repeat of the 2022 economic crisis.

During his address, Wickremesinghe announced measures to protect the economy, including a wage increase for plantation workers to SLR 1,700 (£4.58), and plans to designate ‘line rooms’ as villages to improve living conditions. He also pledged initiatives to bolster the export economy and provide opportunities for the nation’s youth.

Reflecting on leadership during crises, Wickremesinghe noted the importance of assuming responsibility, stating, “I was the leader of a party that only had one seat in Parliament. However, I took over responsibility, and UNP never runs away from challenges.”

Amidst political diversity, Wickremesinghe commended the democratic portrayal at Mardana Junction, where cutouts of various parties were displayed, showcasing the country’s commitment to democracy.
